Abstract
Gastrointesinal polyp is a premalignant lesion, it is recommanded to be removed. Endoscopic polypectomy has long been considered as a safe and effective method for removal of polyps. One hundred forty eight endoscopic gastrointestinal polypectomy
were
done in 111 patients who visited Chungnam National University Hospital from January in 1991 to August in 1993, and clinical character including histopathology were evaluated.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1) Most patients were in sixth decade. The ratio of male to female was 1.27:1.
2) The removed gastrointestinal polyps were mostly below 1.0cm in size. (upper GIT (Gastrointestinal tract); 64.6%, colon; 61.5%)
3) The number of single polyp was 68(88.3%) in upper GIT and 23(67.6%) in colon.
4) The most common location of polyps was gastric antrum 52(54.2%) in upper GIT and rectum 25 (48.1%) in colon.
5) The common clinical symptoms were epigastric pain(45.5%), indigestion(26.0%), epigastric discomfor920.8%), hematemesis(2.6%), melena, melena(1.3%) in upper GIT polyps and lower abdominal pain(23.5%), hematochezia(20.65), constipation(17.6%),
melena(14.7%) in colonic polyps.
6) Histopathologic examinations revealed that most common type was hyperplastic type(63.4%) in upper GIT polyps and adenomatous type (86.5%)in colonic polyps. The pathologic findings of forceps biopsy were not consistent with that of polypectomy
in
19.5% in upper GIT polyps and 15.4% in colonic polyps. One of 22 adenomatous polyps with forceps biopsy in upper GIT turned out to have adenocarcinoma.
7) Almost all cases were in the absence of significant complications.
In conclusion endoscopic polypectomy is thought to be safe and rerative simple procedure and to be important in assessing malignant changes of gastrointestinal polyps and secondary prevention of malignancy.
